Choosing the right size ball
The first step in purchasing a soccer ball is determining the proper size for your age group. Many soccer leagues have
different size requirements, so be sure to check with your coach to find out which is the proper size. Soccer balls come in
three different sizes which range from size 3 to size 5.
Size 3
- Size 3 balls are the smallest balls and are generally used for children under the age of 8
- These balls are generally 23-24 inches in circumference and weigh between 11-12 ounces
Size 4
- Size 4 balls are used for players between the ages of 8-12
- Size 4 balls weigh between 12-13 ounces and have a circumference of 25-26 inches
Size 5
- This is the international standard match ball for all ages 13 and older, including all adult play
- The size 5 ball weighs between 14-16 ounces with a circumference of 27-28 inches
Please check with your coach if you have ANY questions concerning equipment.

Soccer Shoes
- The type of soccer shoe you purchase depends on the level of your game, the types of fields you play on, and how much
you want to spend
- You should always buy soccer-specific cleats for playing soccer
- Most leagues will not allow players to wear football-style shoes, which have larger, harder cleats, or baseball cleats,
which contain a toe cleat that can cause injury if the wearer kicks another player.
Many recreational leagues will not allow players to wear metal studs.
- Many multi-sport players wear their soccer cleats for baseball and softball
Molded cleats
- Molded cleats are the basic soccer shoes
- They use non-removable rubber or hard plastic studs formed on the bottom of the shoe to provide traction and control
- If you play mostly on firm grass fields, you should purchase molded cleats
- Beginning and intermediate level players should purchase molded cleats because they are suited to play on almost all fields
types and in all weather conditions
- Molded cleats generally have four studs in the heel area and eight on the front of the shoe
- There are many new stud patterns on the market as manufacturers search for optimal performance
Determining the proper size Soccer Shoe
Fit tips
- Soccer shoes are sized like regular shoes, but most are designed with a more narrow upper than typical sneakers to allow
for better feel and control of the ball
- High-quality leather shoes will generally stretch a bit when worn. They will actually mold to the shape of your foot,
so they should fit snugly when new.
- Shoes that are too small are one of the major causes of foot pain and problems with athletic footwear. But soccer cleats
should naturally fit more snugly than other athletic shoes because of their design.
Determining your shoe size
- Determining your proper shoe size is essential to a comfortable fit
- Don't assume your shoe size is the same as it has always been. The shape of you feet changes over time.
